OBJECTIVE OF THE LESSON.

In this topic, you will learn to identify and analyze social functions, text structure, and elements of language to express and inquire about modality in the event of a state / event / events in the future, according to the context of its use.

DEFINITION
Conditional sentences (also known as conditional clauses or if clauses) are made up of two halves.
One half is a condition (the half with the word if in), The other half is the main clause states the action to occur if the condition is fulfilled. A conditional clause may be introduced by the subordinating conjunction if or another conjunction, such as unless, provided that, or in case of.

Note: please remember that one half of the conditional clause in the future is condition, while the other half is called main clause.

For example:
If I see you in that party (condition), I will introduce you (Main Clause).

A conditional clause may be introduced by the subordinating conjunction if or another conjunction, such as unless, when, provided that, or in case of.

CONDITIONAL CLAUSE IN THE FUTURE TYPE.
There are two type of conditional clause in the future, they are: (1) Real Condition, (2) Unreal Condition.

REAL CONDITIONAL CLAUSE
Social Function of Future Real Conditional is to express the future real condition that mean when there is a possibility, it will happen.

E.g. If the school opens after covid-19 crisis, I will clean the entire class by my self.

It means that both of the condition and the main clause are still possible to be happen. when the condition happen someday, the main clause will be done as well.

Example of Future Real Conditional and its meaning.

  1. If I go to my friend's house for dinner tonight, I will take a bottle of wine or some flowers.
Meaning: I am still not sure if I will go to his house or not.
  2. When I have a day off from work, I am going to go to the beach.
Meaning: I have to wait until I have a day off.
  3. If the weather is nice, she is going to walk to work.
Meaning: It depends on the weather.
  4. Jerry will help me with my homework when he has time.
Meaning: I have to wait until he has time.
  5. I am going to read if there is nothing on TV.
Meaning: It depends on the TV schedule.
GENERIC STRUCTURE
If/When + Simple Present (V1) + Simple Future (will/shall)
Simple Future (will/shall), If/When + Simple Present (V1)

  • IF SHE DRIVES HOME SAFE, HER MOTHER WILL NOT CALL MY MOM ANYMORE
  • WHEN THEY CALL ME, I WILL ASK THEM WHY

Notice that there is no future in the if- or when-clause.

CONDITIONAL CLAUSE (IF VS WHEN)
Both "if" and "when" are used in the Future Real Conditional,
"if" suggests that you do not know if something will happen or not.
"When" suggests that something will definitely happen at some point; we are simply waiting for it to occur.

Examples:
When you call me, I will give you the address.
You are going to call me later, and at that time, I will give you the address.
If you call me, I will give you the address.
If you want the address, you can call me.
